The loss of forestry further depletes oxygen levels and allows carbon dioxide levels to rise. Exposure to an excess of carbon dioxide prevents red blood cells in the lungs from extracting oxygen to deliver it to vital organs. Oxygen is required to oxidize chemicals and other toxins within the body, which makes it an indispensable part of maintaining a healthy, functional colon. Environmental health researcher Sara Shannon theorizes, "... we may have originally evolved in an atmosphere of 38 percent oxygen.

Domtar also obtained ISO 14001 environmental certification for its forestry management practices in over 18 million acres of direcdy managed forest land. ISO 14001 is the internationally recognized standard for Environmental Management Systems and demonstrates that companies are meeting, or striving to meet, exemplary standards of environmental and, in this case, forest, stewardship. The ultimate goal is for Domtar to have all suppliers certified to Forest Stewardship Council or equivalent certification standards. The company gives preference to Forest Stewardship Council-certified suppliers.

Sustainable forestry is still being defined through attentive experimentation, but it's no longer just the domain of a few concerned entrepreneurs. Loggers and environmentalists are working side by side to find responsible ways to make forests more resistant to fire; even bureaucrats in New York City have had to promote sustainable forestry to ensure the safety of their city's water supply. Whatever the motivation of the players, the outcome is the same: healthier forests equal a healthier planet.

As Debal Deb stated in a 2004 publication, modern agricultural and forestry sciences have created a simplification and homogenization of nature in order to minimize uncertainty and to ensure an efficient production of commercial goods: agriculture today consists of an intensification of a few crops, to the detriment of a magnificent genetic diversity created through millennia of experimentation.
The travel expenses of the representatives of communities from the poorer countries, and in general of anyone who had obvious difficulty in traveling, were met by the committee that was formed for the occasion (comprising Slow Food, the Italian Ministry of Agriculture and forestry, the Piedmontese Regional Authority, and the Turin City Council); hospitality was provided by civic and religious organizations and by the Piedmontese farming community (with an important contribution from Coldiretti), which opened its houses and farms to the representatives.

We want to know what jobs may be available, and what hazards we'll have to contend with.

Reinheriting the Earth: Awakening to Sustainable Solutions and Greater Truths

The web of life depends upon water's abundance and its quality, and the solutions we must seek may seem daunting, but not so much so if we've already begun to look at what we've been considering so far in the areas of energy, agriculture and forestry. This particular concern feeds back on all the others, and demands sophisticated solutions matched with the best of our intellect and respect for nature, our heritage and our future. I am also aware of some avant garde research on water, described on the Internet and elsewhere, which promises to purify our waterways once and for all.
The next chapters will give us hope that we do have the technologies to restore the Earth with sustainable development in energy, agriculture, water, forestry, crops, fisheries, mineral resources, while conserving the wilderness and diversity of species. New energy technologies, hemp cultivation, biospheric restoration and opening ourselves to an emerging science of consciousness will help us enhance our our ability to came back into balance with the Earth and with ourselves.
We shall need to rethink our agrarian and forestry practices from the bottom up. Let's give the farmer and lumberjack the spade. Let's start planting new trees, as in the case of China described below. Let's keep the woods as source of a quarter of all the world's medicines, a place for limited ecotourism, permaculture, and a heritage of indigenous cultures who might at last thank us for thinking ahead for a change—just in time. One such culture, the Cogi, has managed to isolate itself from the West by retreating to the far reaches of the high Colombian mountains.

Cerro Gordo forestry Cooperative is one of a handful of groups practicing sustainable forestry in the United States. Using a system called Individual Tree Selection Management, which was pioneered in the 1950s by forester Richard Smith, the cooperative cuts scattered individual trees which releases shaded trees for further growth and allows natural regeneration from seedlings that are already present on the forest floor. It harvests no more than the equivalent of the annual growth of the forest, thus perpetually maintaining the forest.
